    One of the most common minerals, quartz forms hexagonal prisms, terminated by rhombohedra or pyramidal shapes. Quartz faces are often striated and the crystals twinned and distorted.
    The colour is amazingly variable, and quartz may be white, gray, red, purple, pink, yellow, green brown, and black, as well as being colourless. This Orissa crystal is a smoky-gray, brown to black variety of quartz that owes its color to gamma irradiation and the presence of traces of aluminum built into its crystal lattice.
