Description
High Grade notes from this branch are RARE. Speaking of which we have one of theonly known SPECIMENS of this note in UNC (Shanghai, Serial # 0000). Regularly 00. Make offer!
Better Grade 1928 Dollar-Denominated ABN banknote from deep within the Chinese Interior! The toning looks darker than it is on the scanned sample. It is very faint and easily escapes notice. The paper is buff not white so the light toning barely shows. VF-XF range but looks XF+ at a glance.
When this note was issued in 1928, Chungking was but a small branch of the Central Bank of China. This and heavy bombardment by Japan for many years make it very scarce in high grade.
The note was engraved by the American Banknote Co. and is 7.25" long with paper that is still quite crisp. Serial number may vary. Just 2-4 light surface folds. No tears, splits, holes, stains, pen marks or other impairments.
Grade Range approx. VF to XF. Beautiful note!
Located in central China on the Yangtze River, Chungking is China's most inland port. For centuries it was a backwater town but today it's a megacity. During and after the Second Sino-Japanese War from Nov 1937 to May 1946, it was Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's provisional capital. Indeed, after the General and remaining army had lived there for a time following their retreat in 1938 from the previous capital of Wuhan, it was formally declared the second capital city (pei du) on 6 September 1940. After Britain, the United States, and other Allies entered the war in Asia in December 1941, one of the Allies' deputy commanders of operations in South East Asia (South East Asia Command SEAC), Joseph Stillwell, was based in the city. This made it a city of world importance in the fight against Axis powers. Chiang Kai Shek as Supreme Commander in China worked closely with Stilwell.
Many factories and universities were relocated from eastern China and ultimately to Chongqing during years of setbacks in the war, transforming this city from inland port to a heavily industrialized city. In late November 1949, the Nationalist KMT government retreated.
