Smoky Quartz is silicon dioxide (SiO2).
From 'Gemstones of the World, by Walter Schumann':
"Named after its smoky color. Very dark stones are called “morion” and "caingorm". Coloring is caused by (natural and artificial) gamma rays. The name smoky topaz is improper and no longer acceptable in the trade. Frequent inclusions are rutile needles. Deposits in Brazil, Madagascar, Russia, Scotland, Switzerland, and Ukraine. It is used just as rock crystal. Can be confused with andalusite, axinite, idocrase, sanidine, and tourmaline."

For healing, take the spirit of a stone with your spirit and put it in your spirit's pocket, don't put the physical stone in your physical pocket (but you can do so, but additionally..). The spirit is what physically heals. None of this is proven, so use your own discretion when working with gemstones.
